Investigating the pathogenesis of Aeromonas in the human gastrointestinal tract

Currently completing her PhD, Lyris is researching Aeromonas, which are found in aquatic environments and in soil. It is a food contaminant and responsible for causing gastroenteritis, wound and respiratory infections and meningitis.

Aeromonas also cause septicaemia in fish which directly affects the aquaculture industry.

In May 2004 Lyris presented her research at the Society of Microbial Ecology in Human Disease in Denmark.

"The University is forging its own identity and research direction. This provides a wider scope and opportunity in which to develop new research directives," says Lyris.

"They also have highly experienced academics with a wealth of knowledge and expertise that they are willing to share."

Lyris has been awarded a three-month scholarship from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. She will travel to Stockholm in November to research Aeromonas toxins at the Microbiology and Tumor Biology Centre.
