Bachelor of Arts (Honours) graduate
Doctor of Creative Arts student

A photojournalist by trade, Luke Keioskie turned to creative writing while studying at the University.

An award-winning journalist, Luke has worked for newspapers and magazines in Australia and the UK, and also for Seven Local News on the Sunshine Coast.

"I originally wanted to study journalism at USC, but gravitated toward creative writing," says Luke. His choice was cemented when he discovered the creative writing courses were taught by accomplished author Gary Crew.

"Gary is a phenomenal teacher, with nothing but encouragement," says Luke. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Communication), and then spent one year teaching communication at Lincoln University in northern England.

He returned to USC to complete his honours degree, with his first novel, Room One Nineteen, evolving from weekly writing exercises in short stories.

Now with a published book under his belt, Luke has again returned to the University to study a Doctor of Creative Arts, as well as teach creative writing to undergraduate students. He is also the recipient of a 2005 Rotary Scholarship.

"I get a real buzz from teaching," Luke says. "Taking a break from journalism and returning to study is the best thing I have ever done."
