Bachelor of Business (Accounting) student

Final-year accounting student Julia Dodd is set to work for one of the world’s largest mining companies after securing a cadetship with Rio Tinto.

Julia applied for the paid cadetship through the National Indigenous Cadetship Program (NICP), a pathway for Indigenous students who are enrolled full-time in their first undergraduate degree.

The cadetship will provide 12 weeks of practical work experience at Rio Tinto, and could open the door to future career opportunities with the company.

Julia says the funding offered as part of the NICP—including funds for tuition fees and study-related expenses—has helped her focus on her study, while a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship has provided further financial support.

“Not having to worry about my financial situation means that I can devote the majority of my time to course work,” Julia says.

Julia also successfully applied for the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS), which provides tutoring assistance to eligible students.

“ITAS provided me with a better understanding of course material, note-taking, assignment writing and delivery, exam revision and memorising techniques,” Julia says.

“I have been able to adapt these skills to my learning style, and found that after my first semester of ITAS, my grades improved immensely.”

Julia also uses a range of resources in the Indigenous student library, as well as the computers and laptops available in the Indigenous computer room.

“I feel very comfortable at uni due to the ‘family’ atmosphere amongst fellow Indigenous students,” she says. “Help is always within reach when needed, which I find very comforting.”

Julia encourages others who are considering degree study to pursue their education and career goals.

“University provides numerous opportunities, from financial support to career advancement,” she says. “I am proof that it doesn’t matter what age you are or what stage you’re at in life, university is always achievable.”
