Michael Weir

Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Science graduate

USC graduate Michael Weir has turned an interest in the environment into a career working on some of Queensland’s largest environmental and traffic projects.

Michael, who studied a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Science, says the opportunity to work in the contaminated land industry attracted him to his role as an Environmental Scientist with international environmental services company Coffey Environments.

Michael supervises and manages the assessment, monitoring and remediation of contaminated sites, including sites along major traffic infrastructure upgrades. Projects he has worked on include the Gateway Bridge duplication; the Gibson Island recycled water plant; and the Ipswich Logan Motorway upgrade. Other works include landfill assessments in remote areas of Far North Queensland.

Michael says the diverse skills he obtained at USC have been an important factor in his success.

“The analytical skills developed through the science component of my degree assist me in the assessment of each site and the interpretation of laboratory results, whereas the business component of my degree has assisted with client relations and business development,” Michael says.

Michael says he enjoys his work, and especially the opportunities he has to travel extensively throughout Queensland and the South Pacific.

His advice to others deciding on a career path is to “match it to the lifestyle you want to have”.
