It all starts here, at USC
USC graduate Catherine Royall talks about how she started her career at Queensland Health BreastScreen
Catherine Royall’s career in public health started at USC with a Bachelor of Science (Public Health) and an Honours degree in Health Promotion.
Find out how you can start at USC, at the Mid-year Options Evening on Wednesday 14 May.
Catherine is now a senior project officer in the BreastScreen Queensland Program at Queensland Health.
Her role involves recruitment and retention of radiographers, and developing strategies for the BreastScreen Queensland workforce.
“It all started with my degree from USC. It has been fundamental to what I have achieved in my career so far,” says Catherine.
Catherine had already begun a degree in Canberra, and when she moved to the Sunshine Coast she was excited to find a university where she could continue her studies. She also appreciated the more personal environment.
“At larger universities a lot of students slip through the cracks,” she says, “but because the USC lectures are smaller it is very one-on-one, so it’s really easy to get help and the staff know you by name.
“I even landed my position after lodging an expression of interest for a temporary position within Queensland Health at the suggestion of my Honours supervisor at USC.”
Catherine says her degree is valued within her workplace and applicable to her day-to-day work.
“My degree has proved very practical. Everything I learnt at USC I use at work all the time.”
Her qualifications have also given her the opportunity to expand her role.
“Because I have the qualifications, I have the opportunity to do more within my position. I have progressed from Project Officer to Senior Project Officer for Workforce and Training in the two years since I began with Queensland Health,” she says. “And I believe there will be other opportunities in the future.”
