A USC degree and industry cadetship provided Vashti Warren with the skills and confidence she needed to secure a position with Suncorp.
“After going to a careers fair, I was really impressed by the opportunities Suncorp offered,” says Vashti, who studied a Bachelor of Business (Accounting).
Vashti applied online and, following a series of interviews, was offered a position as a Financial Analysis Accountant within the graduate recruitment program.
“I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out,” she says.
Vashti believes her degree, and the support she received at USC, gave her the experience she needed to win the job. “I definitely feel my degree helped me in gaining my position. My communication skills and confidence improved so much.”
Vashti also attributes her success to the industry experience she obtained throughout her studies.
“I gained a cadetship with the Australian Customs Service as part of the National Indigenous Cadetship Program,” Vashti says.
“It was such an amazing opportunity. I learned a lot about working in a large organisation and with a diverse range of people.”
Vashti offers this advice to other students: “Make sure you get work experience while you’re at uni. It really is invaluable.”
“I’d also like to say to all students—don’t wait for opportunities to fall into your lap, go out there and make it happen. Make your own opportunities.”
