Ysanne Hook-Long

Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) and Bachelor of Science (Honours) graduate

Ysanne Hook-Long is putting the science skills she gained at USC to good use by helping couples who are unable to conceive naturally to have their own children.

Ysanne, who studied a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) and a Bachelor of Science (Honours), says her role as an IVF Scientist at IVF Sunshine Coast gives great job-satisfaction.

“The thing I most enjoy about my current position is seeing couples who have gone through so much achieve results—an on-going pregnancy,” she says.

Ysanne says her honours degree gave her the practical experience and problem-solving abilities she uses in her day-to-day work.

“The hands-on experience of the honours program made me think and troubleshoot scientifically, and I believe this greatly helped in achieving employment in a hands-on laboratory setting,” she says.

Ysanne is currently undergoing a new learning-curve, as she undertakes training in Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). This technique is used where usual IVF processes would have very little chance of success.

“This relatively new technology gives couples a chance to have a child where previously they would have had very little hope of having their own biological child,” Ysanne says.
