Simon O'Brien
Computer Systems Officer (Network), Queensland Department of
Education and the Arts, Brisbane
Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (BICT)
graduate
Simon O'Brien has made a smooth transition from a full-time
degree to a full-time career.
After undertaking an industry internship in the last semester of
his Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology, Simon
successfully secured a permanent position with the Queensland
Government.
"The internship helped me to gain the position," says Simon.
"Everything I learned throughout the BICT helps me in day-to-day
events at Education Queensland."
Simon now helps maintain and monitor a computer network
consisting of over 1,400 sites, 140,000 machines and more than
550,000 users. His specific duties include security, remote access,
Internet access and proxy issues.
"This is the perfect place to start a career in networking,"
Simon says. "Such a large, complex organisation and network creates
a very dynamic work environment."
Simon has always been interested in computing and networking
technologies; putting his skills to practice during his degree by
working on the University's IT Student Help Desk.
"I like learning hands-on, and the internship and the help desk
experience gave me the opportunity to do that. The BICT at USC is a
diverse program; I think it offers all an IT professional will or
should need to succeed in the industry."
