Sporting teams from the University of the Sunshine Coast certainly punched above their weight when they competed at the recent Gold Coast Challenge.

USC Sport manager Nathan Gordon said more than 40 USC students competed against those from other Australian universities in basketball, beach volleyball, beach touch, netball and surfing.

He said USC won medals in four of the five sports contested, including gold in the men’s beach volleyball and the surfing teams challenge, and silver in the men’s basketball and mixed beach touch.

“Nathan Katterns and Tara Christie from the USC surfing team were standouts during the competition, both reaching the finals of the open shortboard division,” Mr Gordon said.

“Nathan also took home the gold medal in the longboard division, while Tara won silver medals in the longboard and bodyboard divisions and bronze in the shortboard.”

USC’s women’s netball team finished seventh overall.

The Gold Coast Challenge from 6-9 July was run by Australian University Sport as a prelude to the 2008 Australian University Games in Melbourne starting in late September.

The challenge aimed to promote and increase student participation in activities through non-traditional sports, with emphasis on the social and interactive side of participation.
