USC earns Employer of Choice for Women citation

USC staff celebrate at last year's International Women's Day celebration

5 March 2008

The University of the Sunshine Coast is one of 99 organisations nationally, and one of only 10 in Queensland, that earned an Employer of Choice for Women citation on Tuesday 4 March.

These citations are awarded annually by the Federal Government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA).

This is the fourth successive year that the University has received an EOWA citation due to its continued efforts to increase the representation of women at all organisational levels and assist employees maintain work/life balance.

Tougher new criteria this year required organisations to show strong commitment to paid maternity leave, part-time work for female managers, sex-based harassment training, gender pay equity and the promotion of women to managerial roles.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM said he was proud of USC’s continued success in earning the citation.

“This year, the qualifying bar has been raised, yet USC has still achieved the distinction for a fourth consecutive year,” he said.

“It is imperative that we continue to explore ways that make work arrangements flexible enough to satisfy both women and the organisation for mutual advantage.”

USC’s success in gaining the citation will make its celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday 7 March from noon to 2pm even more special.

The event will feature presentations by USC’s Professor of Psychology Mary Katsikitis, Tourism lecturer and Olympian Gayle Mayes and Director of Information Services Sandra Jeffries, along with lunch and entertainment.
