A varied exhibition of paintings, memorabilia, posters and ephemera celebrating World AIDS Day will be on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery from Thursday 22 November, to Thursday 6 December.

The exhibition, called Everybody’s Business, has been organised by the Sunshine Coast World AIDS Day Alliance to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said a highlight of the exhibition would be a block from the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

“The AIDS Memorial Quilt Project is a national project founded in 1988 from the larger international Names Project,” she said.

“Each block is 90cm x 180cm and quilt blocks are made by family, friends and lovers to celebrate the lives of those lost to the disease and to put a human face to statistics.

“We also will display posters from past campaigns, T-shirts, and paintings by people living with HIV/AIDS.

“There will be plenty of preventative educational material and other ephemera to make an interesting and informative exhibition.

“It really is Everybody’s Business to educate about safe sex and to promote compassionate dialogue to reduce HIV/AIDS related discrimination.”

Spiritus Positive Directions Client Liaison Officer Chris Howard said the exhibition would have wide appeal.

“This exhibition is particularly exciting as it incorporates a collection of material from the past 26 years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” he said.

“I am sure that visitors to the gallery will be fascinated by the diversity of exhibits.”

Queensland Positive People General Manager Simon O’Conner and Dr David Sowden of Nambour General Hospital will be guest speakers at the official opening of the exhibition on Friday 30 November at 5.30pm.

Admission to the exhibition is free and the public is welcome. The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2007 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Sajen Legal.
