Climate change could determine who wins election
University of the Sunshine Coast Lecturer in Politics Bronwyn Stevens will tomorrow (Tuesday 9 October) discuss the likely impact of climate change on the upcoming Federal election.
Ms Stevens will present a research seminar entitled “Politics, Elections and Climate Change” at USC from noon to 1pm.
The seminar will focus on how Australians have come to identify climate change as a major political issue.
Ms Stevens said the Australian government had been slow to take the measures necessary to limit greenhouse gas emissions, despite mounting evidence of the threat of climate change.
“As recently as last year, the Prime Minister was refusing to concede that global warming was a scientifically-verified phenomenon,” she said.
“His government rejected targets limiting emissions because they would have negative effects on the Australian economy.
“With the ALP ascendant in the polls and proclaiming targets on greenhouse emissions, the Coalition has changed tack and put forward some targets of its own.
“But have they offered too little too late, and is the ALP policy credible in electoral terms?”
