Secret Santa makes way for Christmas giving
Faculty of Science, Health and Education staff at the University of the Sunshine Coast showed they believe “it is better to give than to receive” at their recent Christmas party.
They ditched their usual “secret Santa” process of giving each other small gifts in favour of donating money to the Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre.
This not-for-profit organisation at Nambour provides a wide range of therapy for children – from newborns to 18 year olds – who have physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities.
USC’s Head of School of Health and Sport Science Professor John Lowe said the faculty’s Christmas party at the Wharf Tavern, Mooloolaba, raised $180 for the therapy centre.
“In the past, our Christmas party has included a secret Santa activity,” Professor Lowe said. “But this year we decided instead to support a local charity.
“The Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre was chosen because it is a good cause, it involves children and we are set to have a greater association with the centre next year when we introduce a new Occupational Therapy degree.”
This degree is one of numerous new degrees – including Psychology, Engineering and Paramedic Science – being offered by USC in 2008.
The University will hold a free information evening, called USC Options, from 4.30-8pm on Wednesday 19 December for all those intending to study at USC in 2008. To register, phone (07) 5456 5000 or email <options@usc.edu.au>.
