Graduate becomes CQU’s Vice-Chancellor

Professor Scott Bowman

20 November 2009

University of the Sunshine Coast graduate Professor Scott Bowman was recently appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of CQUniversity.

Professor Bowman graduated from USC with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2005 after studying online over four semesters.

When he started his MBA, Professor Bowman was working for the University of South Australia as Dean of the Whyalla Campus and the foundation Director of Regional Engagement.

He moved to James Cook University in North Queensland in 2004, where he took up various Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor positions in Academic Planning and Development, International and Engagement, and Corporate and Commercial Operations.

Professor Bowman became Deputy Vice-Chancellor (University Services) and Registrar and Head of the Cairns Campus at JCU in 2007, and continued in these roles until he started at CQU in August this year.

The former radiographer said he believed his study at USC had boosted his career opportunities and had helped prepare him for the challenges of being a vice-chancellor.

“I think the vice-chancellor’s role, or any senior management role at a university, involves managing a large, complex organisation which has a fair element of business in it,” he said.

“The MBA I studied at USC has given me a lot of background knowledge and the skills to run such a big, complex organisation.

“I can work with accountants and business professionals, and I know my way around a set of university financial sheets. The MBA broadened me out in some areas I hadn’t covered before. It’s been incredibly useful.”

Professor Bowman said he particularly appreciated the flexible delivery method of the MBA at the University of the Sunshine Coast, as well as the friendly nature and helpfulness of USC’s staff.
