Professional development and support

Excellent research that has a significant impact on disciplines and society depends, among other things, upon institutional capacity and individual researcher capability.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Deans and Heads of School ensure the University has a staff profile in research commensurate with institutional goals. This includes provision of professional development opportunities at faculty, school and research centre/group levels and institution-wide provision through the Professional Development Program.

Teaching and Research Services (TARS) is responsible for academic development and support and within TARS the Office of Research plays a leadership role in the provision of professional development and support for researchers and supervisors.

Through the Research Management Committee, the University establishes an annual professional development plan for researchers and supervisors and makes it available through the USC website and USC portal.

The University’s priorities for professional development and support are researchers undertaking high quality research and early career researchers, particularly members of designated research centres and groups.

Central to the current Professional Development Plan for Researchers 2008-2009 are publication and grant syndicates, mentoring, research design and aspects of research supervision.

In relation to support for researchers and supervisors, while the Office of Research provides general support across the institution it is structured to link with faculties, schools and research centres/groups through specific liaison roles.
