Research management

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Greg Hill, is responsible for the leadership and management of research at USC. The Research Management Committee, chaired by Professor Tania Aspland, and the Research Degrees Committee, chaired by Associate Professor David Gadenne, which are standing committees of the Academic Board, provide advice and recommendations to the Academic Board and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor about the development and management of research and research training at USC. This occurs broadly within the joint National Health and Medical Research Council/Universities Australia statement and guidelines on research practice.

Faculties and schools, and the designated research centres and groups that operate within and between them – through their staff – undertake and manage research and research training programs and projects aligned with USC’s research agenda.

Research and research training at USC are lead and managed within a framework of plans, policies and procedures approved and adopted by the Council and the Vice-Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Academic Board and senior staff.

Within this context Teaching and Research Services (TARS) promotes and supports the development of the University’s academic profile, performance and culture. As part of TARS the Office of Research

  1. provides advice and support in relation to strategy and planning, policy and operations, and quality assurance and improvement in relation to research and research training
  2. provides professional development and institutional capacity building services and activities
  3. manages and administers research grants and consultancies, publications, higher degrees by research, research ethics, and external liaison and reporting
