Research strengths
USC undertakes research that is internationally, nationally and locally significant under the banner of two broad themes:
USC further concentrates its research effort in a limited number of areas of research strength. At present these areas are applied genetics in primary production, regional sustainability and the health professions. Currently USC has a designated research centre or research group in each of these areas.
In addition USC enjoys a strong collaborative research relationship with the National Seniors Association for research in the area of productive ageing. This involves participation in the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre.
Sustainability
USC defines sustainability as being "the enhancement of communities into the indefinite future without impinging on the value of natural systems."
Sustainability is achieved through promoting equity within and between generations, conservation of biodiversity and natural systems, and wise use of resources. Sustainability enhances the interdependency and resilience of economic, environmental and social systems.
Regional engagement
USC defines regional engagement as being "the process of building mutually beneficial relationships within and between regions to foster, inspire and activate sustainable outcomes."
There is potential for transference of regional engagement principles and practices (ie local/global transference potential).
