To complete this activity, you will need:

  • the set of Western Desert Art postcards
  • Internet access to explore further use of icons, elements and detail.

Suggested Internet resources include:

Use the Internet resources and postcard set to identify images in the artwork of the postcards and see if you can find the story of the pictures you investigate.

Western Desert artists use symbols like these to tell their personal stories. Some stories (or parts of stories) are not revealed to people who are not permitted to know the story.

Use some of these Indigenous symbols to create your own story in a picture. Develop a display to share with others in your school. Make copies of some of the icons you could not explain. Ask classmates  if they have found an explanation that you could not find.

Various icons used by the artists in their paintings.
