The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery is proud to host Australia’s most prestigious drawing exhibition, the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA). The exhibition which opened on Thursday 5 April is on national tour from the Grafton Regional Art Gallery. The JADA is a biennial competition and award that attracts entries from artists across Australia.

Stanthorpe artist Thomas Spence’s work, The Long Yard of Shellharbour, won first prize of A$10,000 when the awards were announced in October 2006. In addition, the Grafton Regional Gallery purchased a further A$10,000 worth of artwork to develop its unique collection.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said that more than 10 Queensland artists were represented in this year’s exhibition. “This is a high-profile exhibition and visitors can see the best drawings in Australia,” she said. “This will be of interest to anyone who understands that drawing, mark-making, is the basis of all art forms.”
