Practice Manager, Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers
“I had the pleasure of working with a Human Resources Intern from the University of the Sunshine Coast for the first time in 2013. Having never gone down this path before, I was a little unsure of what to offer in terms of a meaningful project or assignment (both from our point of view and from hers). I had a couple of rough ideas for projects and it was only after consultation with the University staff and the Intern herself that we were able to work together to develop a project that would be of benefit to our business.
Ellen, the Intern I worked with, was extremely professional and driven at all times towards successful completion of her project. She was able to anticipate what it was that I was hoping to achieve from the project (even though at times, I hadn’t quite worked that out myself). She was also an expert at extracting from me the exact type of information she needed to progress the project.
The end result for Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers was completion of a project that we had only ever dreamt of undertaking. The nature of the project was such that I could never have undertaken it on my own, nor could I have completed it in the time frame that was available to us and at such a high level. I cannot thank our Intern enough for the excellent job she did and the willingness with which she tackled the project. Thank you.”

"When I first considered taking on interns I thought it was a great way to give back to the University and to help develop the career of a young student, however I didn't realize just how much I would get out of the experience. The help of the students was absolutely invaluable in organizing our major fundraiser for the year as well as the awards ceremony and I could not have done it without them.
Taking on student interns was very satisfying personally and allowed me to stay connected with the University, was inspiring to be around such enthusiastic students with fresh new ideas and reminded me just how far I have come since I graduated. The process of working with these new team members really made me stop and question how I do things and why- always valuable!.
I will miss them when the placement is completed, and wish that I had a paid position to offer them both however being a not-for-profit we do not have any paid staff. I encourage any employer looking for a staff member qualified in public relations, marketing and event management to look at both Danielle and Alice who are exceptional, well presented young professionals; who are enthusiastic and have outstanding communication skills."
“Highly recommend getting involved with these guys! We took on-board our first ever intern through USC Internships this year. Melissa Martin, USC’s Business Internship Coordinator, made the whole process really easy and we are ecstatic with the student she hand-picked for us. Blaine is just 4 weeks through his time with us and he is already providing us with meaningful business research. It is also great to have positive young folk and their energy in the office. Thanks heaps guys!”

“We have had several interns from USC and have enjoyed the experience. We have found that the students who participate in the program are very keen to learn and apply their knowledge from their degree. We have also benefited from the relationship by offering our last intern a position in our firm. We believe that we need to keep investing in the future of the industry and participating in providing relevant and real life training and the interim program helps us contribute to this. We recommend participating in the program.”

“It was a pleasure having Joelle as our intern student. I believe being in a small family business she obtained a lot of knowledge and understanding of the overall challenges, changes, pressures and time constraints a small business goes through with such limited cash flow and resources. Joelle was briefed on a weekly basis of the events that had taken place, the decisions made and why, also what was planned. She was not restricted or pigeon holed to one specific area or speciality which gave her a broad overview of our vision and how we plan to obtain our goals and grow our business.”
