International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) is an international day of celebration and advocacy that focuses on bringing visibility to LGBTIQ+ issues of discrimination and violence while also celebrating LGBTIQ+ people’s resilience.
IDAHOT was created in 2004 with the purpose of drawing the attention of policy makers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the discrimination and violence faced by LGBTIQ+ people around the world. IDAHOT is held annually on May 17th, marking the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. The date is celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same gender acts are illegal.
The theme for 2017’s IDAHOT is ‘families,’ chosen in consultation with advocates around the world. This theme focuses on both the role families play in the well-being of LGBTIQ+ people, and the rights of LGBTIQ+ families. Events can range from forums, online reports and social media campaigns, sports sessions, religious gatherings, picnics, dances, and/or public protests.
USC and other Universities around Australia hold IDAHOT events to champion sexual and gender diversity, such as a Market Day event, discussion forums, twilight screenings of LGBTIQ+ movies, and raise the Rainbow flag for the day to demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity.
USC will be hosting a number of events across our campuses.
