The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) stipulates a series of learning outcomes that graduates will achieve as a result of learning. To support USC HDR candidate's learning outcomes at AQF Level 9 and 10, a two-level system has been designed within which candidates complete the following modules:

The levels will be structured for individual candidate's timing and progression in their Higher Degree by Research (HDR). Each level will be conducted over three or four days, and offered at least once every semester. Candidates must attend all sessions in order to complete a module, and may participate in the levels at any time throughout candidature, although the target audience for each level is provided below as a guide.

Probationary candidates

Level One is targeted at probationary HDR candidates.

Topics covered include:
  • Research conduct and governance
  • Research networking
  • Candidature management
  • Preparing for confirmation of candidature (break out faculty session)
  • Academic writing
  • Research ethics
  • Writing a literature review
  • Writing a research proposal
  • Introduction to Research Methods and Design
  • Research presentation skills
  • Qualitative research methods
  • Quantitative research methods

In 2016 Level One will be offered on the following dates:

  • Semester 1, 29 March - 1 April (over four days)
  • July (recordings to be available on Blackboard, USC login required)
  • Semester 2, 27 - 30 September (over four days)
  • November (recordings from Semester 2, 2015 to be available on Blackboard, USC login required)

Confirmed candidates

Level Two is targeted at confirmed HDR candidates.

  • Research conduct and governance
  • Strategies for Thesis Completion
  • Preparing for submission and examination (break out faculty session)
  • Data management
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Editing, proof-reading and peer-review
  • Funding research
  • Research communication
  • Research careers panel discussion
  • Research ethics top-up (separate session, contact humanethics@usc.edu.au or animalethics@usc.edu.au to make a booking).
