High school attended: Smithfield and Atherton State High Schools (Cairns, Far North Queensland)

Degree: Bachelor of Creative Industries (Majors in Screen & Media Studies, and Creative Writing) and Diploma in Languages (Italian)
Target graduation date: End of 2017

My journey: Upon graduating Year 12 in 2009, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) at JCU in Cairns, however after the first year, I decided it wasn’t the right timing and I commenced full-time work as an Optical Assistant, and then a Property Management Representative for a real-estate in Palm Cove. Three years, and a TAFE course in Tourism, Leisure & Events Management later, I made the life-changing decision to move to study an exciting, brand new program at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Uni involvement: My involvement in the USC community started with a volunteering role at the Art Gallery and the Student Guild, leading to joining the FRANK About Art group on-campus, as well as USC Eco, which have collaborations with the Good Harvest market and the Moving Feast initiative. I am currently in my second semester of the Student Mentor Program.

Other: In my time so far at USC, many opportunities have been available to me as a student and also as a staff member. Most recently I was invited to attend a 1-day Smart Steps program with primary school students at USC Gympie, which was an eye-opener to just how switched on kids are about careers and their future. Although I am yet to travel overseas to study, I have a great deal of Events Management work experience from being involved in Festival Cairns to installing exhibitions with the USC Gallery curatorial team.

Career aspirations: Studying and working at USC has become a way of life (and the realization of a lifelong dream to be waking up every morning with purpose and motivation!) Through contributing to the growth of the USC community, my aim is to progress into a Masters/Doctorate of Creative Arts after completing my undergraduate, with the intention of becoming a tutor or lecturer in Creative Writing.

Why did you become an Ambassador? The reason I chose to apply for the role as Student Ambassador is because I believe my journey and transition into USC makes my circumstance one that is both unique, yet relatable for prospective students who may be relocating to start their degree at USC. I wish to share my journey to benefit future students and their families, all of whom leave a lasting legacy.

What do you like about USC? USC is an exemplar learning and teaching institution in so many ways; the teaching quality for one, is rated 5 stars and it is evident when new students or visitors first experience USC as their first impressions of the student engagement and culture on-campus are positive indicators of its’ success.
