Family affair: mother and son graduate from USC together

Breadcrumbs

Lizzy, 46, of Sandgate, and her son Sam Joyce, of Fitzgibbon, will graduate in April with their USC degrees.

8 February 2017

A 46-year-old USC student who is also a mother of seven has shown it’s never too late to achieve your dream of getting a university degree.

USC student Lizzy England left university 26 years ago to have her eldest child, Sam. Now, mother and son are about to graduate together after both completing degrees at USC.

In 2013, Lizzy enrolled at USC to pursue her goal of becoming an occupational therapist. During her degree she won the Stacey Mowle Smiles of Strength OT Prize and completed work placements at Princess Alexandra Hospital’s emergency ward and Prince Charles Hospital’s geriatric evaluation management ward.

She also shared her time on campus with Sam, who studied a Bachelor of Business (Supply Chain Management).

Lizzy and Sam will officially receive their degrees at USC’s Graduation Ceremonies in April.

“Mum dropped out of uni the first time so I’m unbelievably proud of her for going back. It feels really special for us to be finishing at the same time,” Sam said.
