1. Purpose of policy

This policy sets out the specifications and standards for academic dress for all members of the USC community. Academic dress, also known as regalia, is worn for all USC graduation ceremonies. Academic dress may also be worn at other formal university events at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor and President.

2. Policy scope and application

The policy covers Council members, officers of the University, recipients of honorary awards, graduates and graduands of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Unless otherwise specified, staff involved in university ceremonies and/or academic processions should wear the academic dress appropriate to their own degree.

3. Definitions

Please refer to the University’s Glossary of Terms for policies and procedures. Terms and definitions identified below are specific to these procedures and are critical to its effectiveness:

B.C.C. refers to the British Colour Council numbering system, as described in the British Colour Council Dictionary of Colour Standards, 2nd edition, 1951

cloth, traditionally means fabric made of wool, but cloth made of other materials, such as Rayon or recycled plastics, may be substituted where appropriate

trencher cap, means a mortarboard

4. Academic Dress for Council members and officers of the University

4.1 Chancellor

Black cloth gown with appropriate gold trimmings and a black velvet bonnet with gold cord tassel.

4.2 Vice-Chancellor and President

Black cloth gown with appropriate silver trimmings and a black velvet bonnet with silver cord tassel.

4.3 Council Members

The academic dress appropriate to their own degree or a black cloth gown in the style of the master’s gown of the University of Cambridge with facings in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27) and a black velvet bonnet with a cord tassel in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27).

4.4 Yeoman Bedell

A black cloth gown in the style of the master’s gown of the University of Cambridge with appropriate black ornaments and with facings in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27) and a black cloth trencher cap with black tassel.

5. Academic Dress for Honorary Awards

5.1 Honorary Doctorate

A cloth gown in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27) in the style of the University of Cambridge with facings and sleeve linings in Black (B.C.C 220) silk with appropriate silver trimmings. A black velvet bonnet with a cord tassel in Rifle Green with a Cambridge hood in Rifle Green fully-lined with Black silk and silver trimmings around the edge of the hood.

5.2 Honorary Senior Fellow

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a full-length silk stole in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27).

5.3 Emeritus Professor

The academic dress appropriate to their own degree.

5.4 Distinguished Companion of the University

The academic dress appropriate to their own degree or a black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a full-length silk stole in Rifle Green (B.C.C. 27).

6. Academic Dress for Academic Awards

6.1 A graduate who has been admitted to an award at USC prior to January 2012 when this policy was first introduced, may continue to wear the academic dress and colours as prescribed at the time of their admission to the award, if they so wish.

6.2 Award Colours

With the exception of the Doctor of Philosophy and Associate Degrees, each academic award of the University will be allocated a designated hood or stole colour determined by the academic award Field of Education (FoE) and as approved by Academic Board.

6.3 Diplomas

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a black cloth Oxford Burgon-style hood lined with silk to a depth of 5 centimetres in the designated colour.

6.4 Associate Degrees

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor's gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a black cloth Oxford Burgon-style hood lined with silk to a depth of 10 centimetres in the designated colour.

6.5 Bachelor Degrees, including combined and double degrees

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a black cloth Oxford Burgon-style hood lined with silk to a depth of 15 centimetres in the designated colour.

6.6 Bachelor (Honours) Degrees

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a black cloth Oxford Burgon-style hood lined with silk to a depth of 15 centimetres in the designated colour with a 2 centimetre strip in Black (B.C.C. 220) commencing 3 centimetres from the edge.

6.7 Graduate Certificates

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor's gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a full-length black cloth stole edged to a depth of 2.5 centimetres in the designated colour.

6.8 Graduate Diplomas

A black cloth gown in the style of the bachelor's gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a full-length black cloth stole fully-lined in the designated colour.

6.9 Master Degrees

A black cloth gown in the style of the master’s gown of the University of Cambridge, a black cloth trencher cap and a black cloth Oxford Burgon-style hood fully-lined with silk in the designated colour with a 2-centimetre strip in Black (B.C.C. 220) commencing 3 centimetres from the edge.

6.10 Professional Doctorates

A black cloth gown in the style of the doctor's gown of the University of Cambridge, facings and sleeve linings in Post Office Red (B.C.C. 209), a black velvet bonnet with a black cord tassel and a black cloth Cambridge hood fully-lined with silk in the designated colour.

6.11 Doctor of Philosophy

A black cloth gown in the style of the doctor’s gown of the University of Cambridge, facings and sleeve linings in Post Office Red (B.C.C. 209), a black velvet bonnet with a red cord tassel and a black cloth Cambridge hood fully-lined with silk in Post Office Red (B.C.C. 209)

7. Acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ancestry

The University of the Sunshine Coast has a strong commitment to Australian Reconciliation. To enable Indigenous Australians to have their ancestry recognised during graduation ceremonies, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have the option of wearing a stole incorporating the colours of the respective flags at their ceremony (red, black and gold for Aboriginal students and/or blue, green and white for Torres Strait Islander students – refer to http://www.dpmc.gov.au/government/australian-national-symbols/australian-flags). This will be in addition to wearing the hood and/or stole required for their degree.
