1. Purpose of policy

The purpose of this policy is to provide a framework for the productive involvement of Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows in the academic life of the University.

2. Application of policy

This policy relates to adjunct appointments made for particular academic purposes for an extended period of time, and visiting fellow appointments made for particular academic purposes for a shorter period of time.

3. Overview

3.1 Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows will be bound by the University’s Staff Code of Conduct – Governing Policy and will not be covered by the University’s Enterprise Agreement.

3.2 Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows will have qualifications or experience that enable them to make particular contributions to the academic work of the University.

3.3 Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows will be provided with the levels of access and support necessary for them to complete their agreed contributions to the University.

3.4 Whereas Adjunct Appointees generally will have a longer-term connection with the University, Visiting Fellows generally will be from overseas and be invited to spend a period of time at the University to strengthen institutional partnerships and achieve specific goals in teaching research or engagement.

4. Adjunct Appointees

4.1 Adjunct Appointees will contribute to the University directly through teaching, research and/or engagement activities, or indirectly through the support of these activities, or both.

4 .2 Adjunct Appointees may be appointed in faculties or other cost centres, at the instigation of an Executive Dean or cost centre manager, for at least one year and up to three years with the possibility of renewal of appointment.

4.3 The involvement of Adjunct Appointees in the University will be authorised by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

4.4 Adjunct Appointees will be entitled to network, telephone and library access similar to that of any other member of staff. Additional facilities and support will be the responsibility of the host Executive Dean or cost centre manager.

4.5 If Adjunct Appointees become full-time or part-time staff of the University their adjunct status ceases.

4.6 In exceptional circumstances, Adjunct Appointees may have casual or sessional appointments (up to the equivalent of a maximum of 0.4 time fraction) and may be remunerated for specific tasks outside the terms of their adjunct appointment.

4.7 Adjunct Appointees, at the discretion of the Executive Dean or cost centre manager, may have the title of professor, associate professor, senior lecturer, lecturer, scientist, or appropriate other title.

4.8 Adjunct Appointees may use their given title on business cards, but must acknowledge their adjunct status in academic attributions.

4.9 Adjunct Appointees who are not employed by another university will normally attribute their post-appointment academic publications to the University of the Sunshine Coast.

4.10 Executive Deans or cost centre managers will provide Adjunct Appointees with a role statement that has been developed in conjunction with Human Resources.

5. Visiting Fellows

5.1 Visiting Fellows will contribute to the University directly through teaching, research and/or engagement activities, or indirectly through the support of these activities, or both.

5.2 Visiting Fellows may be appointed in faculties or other cost centres, at the instigation of an Executive Dean or cost centre manager, for up to one year.

5.3 The involvement of Visiting Fellows in the University will be authorised by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

5.4 Visiting Fellows will be entitled to network, telephone and library access similar to that of any other member of staff and, in most cases will require access to standard office facilities. Provision of additional facilities and support will be the responsibility of the host Executive Dean or cost centre manager.

5.5 The host Executive Dean or cost centre manager will determine the type and level of office and additional facilities that may be provided, and which may include provision on a shared basis.

5.6 Visiting Fellows may be remunerated for specific tasks outside the terms of their Visiting Fellow appointment.

5.7 Visiting Fellows, at the discretion of the Executive Dean or cost centre manager, may have the title of professor, associate professor, senior lecturer, lecturer, scientist, or appropriate other title.

5.8 Visiting Fellows may use their given title on business cards, but must acknowledge Visiting Fellow status in academic attributions.

5.9 Visiting Fellows will be encouraged to attribute any publications they authored or to which they contributed in their capacity as USC Visiting Fellows to the University of the Sunshine Coast.

5.10 Executive Deans or cost centre managers will provide Visiting Fellows with a role statement that has been developed in conjunction with Human Resources.

6. Induction of Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows

6.1 All Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows will be welcomed and inducted into the University by processes similar to those used for newly appointed staff.

6.2 The welcoming and induction of Adjunct Appointees and Visiting Fellows will be a shared responsibility of faculties/cost centres, Human Resources, Office of Research and Centre for Support and Advancement of Learning and Teaching.
