1. Purpose of policy

This Policy outlines the selection criteria and basis for the Award of a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence.

2. Application of policy

A Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence may be awarded to any graduating student graduating from an Undergraduate award program (other than a one year Honours program).

A student enrolled in a double degree program will be awarded a single Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence.

3. Determination of award

3.1 For the purposes of the award of a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence, "academic excellence" means the achievement of a Grade Point Average of 6.0 or more and less than 6.5 (refer to Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) – Academic Policy).

3.2 Students who are eligible for consideration but who have completed less than 192 units of study at the University will have their performance in any previous studies awarded as credit taken into account in determining the award of a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence.

3.3 For students identified under Point 3.2 above if, when credit awarded for previous studies are taken into account, their overall Grade Point Average remains at 6.0 or more and less than 6.5 then an award will be conferred. If any credit transfer granted for previous studies cannot, for whatever reason, be equated to a USC standard grade, or credit has been awarded on the basis of Recommended Prior Learning, such that it is not possible to add up to 192 units, then an award will not be conferred.

3.4 The award of a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence will be determined by the Director, Student Services and Engagement in accordance with this Policy and will be advised to the Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor. Details of students to be awarded will also be forwarded to each Executive Dean.

3.5 The determination of the award will be made prior to a Graduation Ceremony and will include consideration of all students who have been graduated in an Undergraduate Award program since the last graduation ceremony.

3.6 A notation stating that a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence has been awarded will be included on the recipient's statement of academic record.

3.7 The award of a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence will be notified to Academic Board and will be acknowledged at the Graduation Ceremony.
