1. Purpose of procedures

The procedures outline how the University will:

  • support the creation of a sustainable future
  • make sustainability an organisational priority, and
  • embed sustainability considerations in decision-making at all levels of the University

It outlines the responsibilities of staff, students and contractors at the University in relation to sustainability.

2. Procedures

2.1 Culture and governance

Sustainability will be embedded in the University’s strategic and operational planning processes, ensuring that Cost Centre Managers nominate and report on sustainability objectives and targets in their Annual Operational Plan.

Information relating to nominated sustainability objectives and targets will be provided to the Sustainability Management Committee for information at its first meeting each year, along with a report against targets nominated for the previous year.

2.2 Teaching and research

Teaching of sustainability will be encouraged in undergraduate programs through application of the sustainability-focussed graduate quality and in line with sustainability values and priorities identified in USC’s Strategic Plan.

Research staff and higher degree by research students will be encouraged to incorporate consideration of relevant sustainability issues, respect for ethical and legal responsibilities and socially responsive and culturally inclusive decision making as integral to research design, implementation and dissemination.

2.3 Corporate practices

The University will reduce the environmental impact of its activities and enhance sustainability through ensuring that sustainability is central to the development and implementation of the Campus Master Plan and other resource-related planning.

The Sustainability Management Committee will submit an Annual Sustainability Report to Council via the Planning and Resources Committee.

2.4 Community engagement

External partnerships will be developed and maintained where appropriate to promote sustainability within the local region and beyond.

Communication of sustainability-related activities and progress towards sustainability at the University will be undertaken via the University’s website, email, newsletters, posters and other media.

3. Authorities/Responsibilities

The following authorities/responsibilities are delegated under these procedures:

3.1 Support and advance the embedding of sustainability principles within the values and priorities of the University. Cost Centre Managers
3.2 Provide oversight of sustainability initiatives for all organisational units for which responsibility is held.
3.3 Nominate sustainability objectives and/or targets within the annual organisational unit Action Plan and provide these to the Sustainability Management Committee for information at its first meeting each year, along with a report against targets nominated for the previous year.
3.4 Discuss sustainability objectives and targets (and how the Faculty/School/Office can deliver on these) in relevant strategic meetings.
3.5 Discuss progress on sustainability goals or actions towards sustainability in Faculty/School/Office meetings where possible.
3.6 Implement appropriate structures that promote, support and acknowledge sustainability initiatives and actions by students and staff at all levels.
3.7 Promote an awareness of resource use (including energy, water and other natural and manufactured resources) and implement actions to reduce resource use where possible.
3.8 Act to support diversity across staff and student profiles and work to support the health and well-being of USC staff and students.
3.9 Provide staff and students with leadership and moral support to assist in achieving the stated sustainability goals, objectives and targets.
3.10 Support staff who wish to undertake training and education in relation to sustainability.
3.11 Support staff participation in relevant sustainability initiatives and actions.
3.12 Recognise and reward staff and students whose contributions to achieving sustainability goals, objectives and targets are commendable through public acknowledgement of achievements.
3.13 Actively champion sustainability as a strategic direction within the area of responsibility and across the University. Members of Executive
3.14 Provide direction and support to facilitate and encourage the embedding of sustainability within the area of responsibility.
3.15 Embed sustainability considerations in the University’s strategic and operational planning processes, ensuring that Cost Centre Managers nominate and report on sustainability objectives and targets in their Annual Operational Plan.

3.17 Provide teaching staff with opportunities and support to further develop and innovate in sustainability education learning and teaching practice.
3.18 Embed sustainability principles and practices in the development and management of the University’s land, infrastructure and commercial services, with attention to:
  • environmental risk
  • the consumption of energy, water and other resources
  • the University’s carbon footprint
  • recycling and waste (encouraging a process of rethink/avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover in operational decisions wherever possible)
  • transport
  • biodiversity
  • the built environment

3.19 Ensure that sustainability is central to the development and implementation of the Campus Master Plan. Director, Asset Management Services
3.20 Develop and manage campus sustainability initiatives.
3.21 Communicate sustainability actions and progress towards sustainability regularly to the University community.
3.22 Develop an Annual Sustainability Report for submission to the Sustainability Management Committee.
3.23 Assess all contracts for goods and services providers, including materials, food and equipment purchases on their whole of life value for money. Chief Financial Officer
3.24 Encourage a process of rethink/avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover in purchasing decisions wherever possible.
3.25 Promote health and wellbeing initiatives to assist in the provision of healthy, safe and supportive learning and working environments. Director, Human Resources
3.26 Include sustainability as part of the online induction process for staff and the online health and safety induction for staff and contractors.
3.27 Include training courses in sustainability as part of the University’s staff development program.
3.28 Ensure that planning for information and communications technology within the University prioritises sustainability considerations. Director, ICT Solutions, IT Services; Director, ICT Performance, IT Services
3.29 Ensure that the acquisition and disposal of information technology equipment considers sustainability issues and represents best practice.
3.30 Provide direction and support to communicate the University’s sustainability actions and achievements through avenues including the University’s website, publications, promotional materials and the media. Director, Marketing and External Engagement
3.31 Support and encourage sustainability-related research. Director, Office of Research
3.32 Encourage all staff, students and partners to conduct research in a sustainable manner.
3.33 Provide direction and support to improve the overall connectedness with students through service excellence by providing students with outstanding face-to-face administration and support services. Director, Student Services and Engagement
3.34 Focus on the health and wellbeing of students through:
  • improved consultation and communication with all students
  • creation of an engaged and supportive community
3.35 Address the sustainability-focussed graduate quality in program learning outcomes. Program Coordinators
3.36 Consider the incorporation of relevant SUS-coded courses when designing and reviewing undergraduate programs.
3.37 Assist in striving to achieve set goals, objectives and targets related to sustainability. Staff and Students
3.38 Participate in sustainability-related activities where possible, whilst pursuing opportunities to enhance the understanding of sustainability at the individual and community level.
