Profile

Geoff Simon commenced teaching at USC in 2012 following a career in private and public sector pathology, and more recently in blood banking and transfusion medicine.

While working for the Queensland Department of Health, Mr Simon led a project to develop an on-line system to manage the ordering and supply of blood products. This system was subsequently trialled in South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, and was adopted nationally in 2010. BloodNet is now used every day in hospitals and laboratories across Australia, processing more than 10 million transactions each year.

In the fields of microbiology, infection control and antimicrobial resistance, Mr Simon has contributed to research projects and consultancies dealing with human clinical data, development of systems and strategies to monitor and report on emerging antimicrobial resistance, and the use of antibiotics in animals and agriculture.

Mr Simon maintains close links with professional and clinical colleagues through consultation with the National Blood Authority and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, and sits on a number of national committees, reference groups and working parties. In 2012, the International Society for Blood Transfusion awarded Mr Simon for clarity, original scientific quality and importance in the field of transfusion medicine in relation to a paper presented in Mexico.
