Sustainability in courses and programs

Breadcrumbs

The University of the Sunshine Coast is sustainability-focused and has developed innovative and rigorous courses and programs of study to advance this critical area of study, research and practice.

At USC we know that being sustainability–focused is complex, cross disciplinary and essential to achieving a balance between meeting our needs today and considering future generations.

A graduate attribute for today and for the future

Sustainability–focused is one of the University's Graduate Attributes, designed and developed to be a part of every USC Program of study.

The Sustainability-focused graduate attribute is supported through the concentration of expertise at the Sustainability Research Centre (SRC).

The SRC not only develops and disseminates cross disciplinary research through its 60+ members (including early career researchers and HDR students), but it feeds expertise into the University's courses and programs.

Sustainability is also the focus of a range of courses and programs, including climate change adaptation, sustainability, public health, environmental science, environment and water (civil engineering).

Many of our undergraduate degree programs allow students to take a Major or Minor in Sustainability:

  • The Faculty of Arts, Business and Law (FABL) has both a major (eight courses), designed to allow students to gain skills, knowledge and qualities in sustainability that are then applied to a major sustainability project, and a minor (four courses) in Sustainability.
  • The Faculty of Science Health Education and Engineering (FOSHEE) have a major called Sustainability which includes the Sustainability- Society minor and then allows students to choose four courses from a variety of upper level sustainability related courses in science.
