Sports Stadium upgrade
The University of the Sunshine Coast Sports Stadium is undertaking upgrades to facilitate increased seating capacity from 320 to 2200 seats. This upgrade is required to support home game fan and broadcasting requirements for Sunshine Coast Lightning netball home games in the new Suncorp Super Netball league commencing in 2017. The Lightning are the first national sporting team for the Sunshine Coast, and the second Queensland team (and only regional team) in the new national league.
The upgrade will include the installation of two sets of retractable seats, with a capacity for 1000 seats on the northern (Building T) end, and 1200 seats on the southern end (total 2200 seats). The retractable seating is stored (retracted) at either end of the Stadium allowing for all three court use when required. When in place for game/event day, the seating extends over courts 1 and 3, to enable court 2 as a show court with seating capacity for 2200 people. This also includes reinforcement of flooring; installation of broadcast-quality lighting; toilet and locker room improvements; some grounds work to facilitate access for broadcast support vehicles; upgrade to existing switchboard and generator; installation of scoreboards; and purchase of a netball-specific drop-in floor.
Note: the Sports Stadium will be unavailable for sport activities between November 2016 – February 2017.
