The University of the Sunshine Coast in partnership with The Encouragement Foundation (TEF) and with the support of Sunshine Coast Rugby Union (SCRU) will launch USC's first rugby union scholarships on Wednesday 21 March.
These scholarships aim to assist talented rugby union players pursue their studies at USC, and be available for the Sunshine Coast Premier Rugby team, the Sunshine Coast Stingrays, at both Colts (Under 19) and Open levels.
This program will see up to $108,000 invested into scholarships over five years.
The scholarships will be funded via donations from the rugby community. Donations of any amount, large or small, will be collected through The Encouragement Foundation which allows for tax-deductable donations to be made by the community.
This presents an opportunity for the rugby community and the Sunshine Coast business community to invest in the future of young individuals and the game of rugby union on the Sunshine Coast.
John Shadforth of The Encouragement Foundation said he was thrilled about this partnership.
“The Foundation is excited to have an opportunity to work with the rugby community and to help develop a sustainable model to enable the scholarship to go on long into the future,” he said.
The rugby union scholarships will be launched during a short presentation outside the USC Art Gallery at 10am on Wednesday 21 March. Representatives from USC, TEF and SCRU will be in attendance.
Dustin Welch, CEO of Savills Sunshine Coast, also will be there to make the first donation to the rugby scholarships program.
USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill praised the Encouragment Foundation for its work in establishing the scholarships.
“It’s great to be able to offer scholarships for students who are looking not only to succeed academically but also in the sport of rugby union,” he said.
“To offer them financial support, so they can focus on their sport as well as their studies without having to worry about juggling work as well, is a good thing.”
Details about the rugby scholarships will be included on the USC website at www.usc.edu.au/scholarships under the heading “scholarships, bursaries and prizes”.
Information on the scholarships as well as donations can be made at The Encouragement Foundation website and the SCRU website.
