A former Mirani State High School student who studied Graphic Design and Creative Advertising at the University of the Sunshine Coast is now an Account Coordinator at a leading Australasian advertising agency.
Sarah Muscat was awarded a Faculty Commendation for Academic Excellence along with her Bachelor of Design and Communication when she attended the recent USC Graduation Ceremony (5 April).
The 22-year-old from the Pioneer Valley said her study had played a big role in her new job at George Patterson Y&R.
She gained the plum position with the agency’s Brisbane office by succeeding in the Communications Council’s national Graduate Trainee Program during the final semester of her USC degree at Sippy Downs last year.
“It’s an awesome job,” she said. “GPY&R Brisbane won the AdNews State Agency of the Year 2012 award, Australia’s Most Effective Agency – Effies 2012 and the Cannes Lions 2012 Australian Agency of the Year.”
Sarah said she chose the USC degree so she could do a double major in Graphic Design and Creative Advertising.
“It’s helped in many ways,” she said. “The Design side has helped me to understand what’s involved in designing the ads and the processes that occur. The Advertising side has helped me to understand the industry jargon and prepared me for things like how to write creative briefs.
“Studying both Design and Advertising has given me a huge advantage and I’ve hit the ground running.”
Sarah said she also enjoyed studying in the United States for a semester through the University’s GO (Global Opportunities) Program.
