Staff from the University of the Sunshine Coast today donated 20 collection baskets full of gifts and food hamper items, along with a cheque for $1,421, to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.
USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill presented the room full of donations to Sue and Dennis McGuigan of the Salvation Army.
The items and money were raised over the past month, particularly during the inaugural USC staff charity swimming carnival on 29 November.
Professor Hill said University staff had given generously to help the Salvation Army provide hampers to local families at Christmas.
The USC swimming carnival, which is expected to be an annual event, raised the donations through entry fees, a barbecue lunch and general donations.
Major Sue McGuigan said USC’s efforts would assist the growing number of clients seeking help from the Salvation Army’s Maroochydore office.
“People say thanks to the Salvos but we say thanks to the community for their support,” she said.
