A new $6,000 Sports Scholarship will be introduced by the University of the Sunshine Coast next month in a bid to help local athletes achieve their sporting dreams while gaining career qualifications.
The USC Sports Scholarship will be awarded to one successful applicant annually, at a value of $2,000 a year for up to three years.
USC Professor of Sport Science Brendan Burkett said eligible applicants would be new or continuing students in one of the University’s undergraduate degrees.
Criteria include demonstrated high level sporting achievement, potential to continue in that sport at a high level, and academic merit.
“The University has a strong connection with the Sunshine Coast region and with the high level of national and international sporting achievements on the Coast, it is appropriate to provide support for sportspeople seeking future qualifications,” Professor Burkett said.
“This scholarship aims to support athletes to stay in the region, compete in sport and to obtain University qualifications for life after sport.
“We already have a strong link with the Sunshine Coast’s Sports Hall of Fame, with the honour board permanently located at the USC Health and Sport Centre.”
Application forms are available on the USC website and will be promoted during Orientation Week from 18-22 February. Applications will close on 1 April.
