Being your own boss has always been on the cards for University of the Sunshine Coast graduate Nic Blair.
Nic, 27, finished his USC Bachelor of Business (Marketing) degree in 2006 and has since gone on to open his own search engine optimisation and marketing agency, Search Factory.
Since launching the Brisbane-based company in 2011, the business has grown into one of the leading agencies of its kind in Australia.
Nic said while starting up his own business was daunting, his degree at USC had provided him with the skills and confidence to follow his passion.
“Digital and online marketing has always been a big focus for me and I found that I had this in common with several graduates in my year,” he said.
“The laid-back, team-work orientated atmosphere at USC provided the perfect environment for mixing with like-minded students who are striving for success. This helped me to identify the type of people I would like to work with in the future.
“So when it came time for me to establish my own business, I didn’t hesitate to ask these former study partners and fellow graduates to come on board.”
Nic now has three USC Business graduates on board, including Director and Co-Owner Michael Bell, Search Engine Optimisation Manager David Butler and Content Marketing Executive Jared Bennett.
Nic said he felt his degree gave him the formal framework to develop and grow his own successful business from scratch.
“I initially worked in a couple of areas and on joint ventures until I was ready to take a chance and put my ideas into action by providing a service offering which filled a gap in the market,” he said.
“The strong business knowledge I and other members of my team developed at USC is proof enough of the quality of graduates emerging from the University. So I would be very keen to hear from future USC graduates who have a passion for this field.”
