A passion for food nurtured while growing up on the family farm and a keen interest in science have inspired Tiaro’s Josie Jamieson-Bews to study the science behind food at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
The Riverside Christian College graduate has received a USC Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship of $12,000 in recognition of her high academic achievement at school.
Josie, who gained an OP4, said the scholarship would help with her living expenses after having moved to the Sunshine Coast at the end of February to start a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University’s main campus at Sippy Downs.
Hours spent cooking wholesome foods with her grandmothers on family properties around Biggenden and Tiaro influenced Josie’s decision to study nutrition and dietetics.
“One of my grandmothers became very interested in nutrition and different ways of eating, and we have carried out some quite interesting experiments with food,” Josie said.
“I love food and cooking and have a great interest in a healthy lifestyle.
“It will be fantastic to be surrounded by people with a similar mindset and to understand the science behind food and the way the body uses it.”
After graduating, Josie hopes to work in sports nutrition, to guide athletes with their diets, or help patients seeking weight loss advice.
Josie said she chose to study at USC after attending an open day at the University and finding the atmosphere so relaxed and welcoming.
