Competing in 50 and 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke (Classification: S10) at the Rio Paralympics
USC connection: USC Spartans swimmer
Michael Anderson is a veteran of both the USC Spartans and the Australian Paralympic team. Michael competed at the Beijing and London Games, where he picked up a gold and a bronze medal in the relay events.
The Mooloolaba resident has been swimming at USC since the high-performance Paralympic program began in 2011. He has nerve impairment in his legs and 75% hearing impairment due to contracting meningitis when he was three years old.
Despite his Paralympic medals, Michael picks his career highlight was breaking his first world record in the 50m backstroke at a small meet in Canada.
Michael is currently ranked third in the world for the 100m backstroke. He hopes to better this performance in Rio, in addition to gaining a podium finish with his relay team.
