Competing in 100m Breaststroke (SB9), 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley (Classification: S10) at the Rio Paralympics
USC connection: USC Spartans swimmer
With five Paralympic gold medals under his belt, Rick Pendleton will be one of the top Australian athletes to watch in Rio. It is the fourth Olympics for the veteran swimmer from Meridan Plains, who is ranked third in the world for the 100m breaststroke.
Rick, who received an Order of Australia Medal in 2009, said the Paralympics were at a different level to any other meet: “It’s a world above anything else you do.”
Rick was born without his left hand, but his training regime is very similar to that of an able-bodied swimmer, with some additional strength training for his left arm. The Meridan Plains athlete works as a swimming coach and is part of the USC Spartans’ leadership team, which mentors younger members of the squad. He has trained at USC since 2011.
