The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Strategic Plan 2011-2015 establishes the following vision for the University:

The University of the Sunshine Coast is regionally relevant and recognised, nationally and internationally, for excellence in teaching, research and engagement.

Deregulation of student enrolments, including a student centred, demand-driven funding system from 2012 and targets for higher education participation and low SES students, will impact on the University's profile and teaching.

Learning and teaching at USC will build on its existing reputation and become an exemplar of access and success in the Australian higher education sector.

Opportunity will be provided over a broader region, and students and the wider community will have educational, cultural and economic possibilities well beyond the current provision.

One of four top level University plans, the focus of this plan is to enable access to the USC experience.

Strategic Priorities

This plan has five areas of strategic priority, based on the requirements and directions of the Strategic Plan.

The strategic priorities are to:

  1. Recruit and support a diverse student population
  2. Provide a high quality student experience
  3. Develop a vibrant and healthy University community and identity
  4. Engage with the regional community through educational, cultural, creative, economic and recreational activities
  5. Extend learning opportunities throughout the region
Strategic Priority 1: To recruit and support a diverse student population
Key strategies
    1. Build aspiration and capacity for university study amongst a range of groups in the community
    2. Further strengthen USC reputation and recruitment through clear, comprehensive information about programs, pathways and support
    3. Enhance the range and promotion of efficient pathways to USC study
    4. Develop comprehensive and integrated social and academic transition initiatives
    5. Develop a targeted and co-ordinated continuum of initiatives to support student progression, including early intervention and practical assistance
Strategic Priority 2: To provide a high quality student experience
Key strategies
    1. Ensure quality interactions between students and staff (including academic, administrative, professional and technical staff)
    2. Create a respectful and equitable learning environment for staff and students (student charter)
    3. Adopt a student centred approach to curriculum, academic and administrative practices
    4. Invest in technologies and resources to enhance the student experience
    5. Masterplan and progressively implement social and learning spaces e.g. Learning Commons, Learning Hub and Uni Square
    6. Provide greater access to enriched learning experiences e.g. WIL and GO
Strategic Priority 3: To develop a vibrant and healthy University community and identity
Key strategies
    1. Support increased opportunities for student and alumni cultural and social interaction throughout the University precinct
    2. Ensure new infrastructure is designed to increase staff and student interaction
    3. Ensure the provision of services supports the expanded timetable for learning
    4. Expand philanthropic and sponsorship opportunities to develop University community and identity
    5. Co-ordinate and plan to optimise the community utilisation of current facilities including art gallery, library, sports and recreational venues
    6. Promote and involve USC alumni as a key element of the University community
Strategic Priority 4: To engage with the regional community through educational, cultural, creative, economic and recreational activities
Key strategies
    1. Develop the range and quality of University community services including health, ageing and career development services
    2. Offer an annual program of intellectual, cultural and professional development activities for the community
    3. Strengthen the relationship between USC and professional associations through joint and partnered initiatives
    4. Work with national and international partners to facilitate collaborative research and development projects
    5. Seek support for fundraising for University priorities
Strategic Priority 5: To extend learning opportunities throughout the region
Key strategies
    1. Expand blended learning capability and capacity
    2. Establish USC presence at additional major sites for learning
    3. Partner for extended learning opportunities and new offerings with other institutions e.g. universities, TAFE and schools
    4. Work with local and state governments to develop effective transport solutions throughout the region
