Study materials

Knowing the study materials you may need and where to find them will help you to be well prepared to start your studies at USC:

Course outlines

The course outline contains key information about your course, such as the course description, course schedule, learning/assessment tasks and due dates. It also has details about textbooks and recommended readings and your responsibilities as a student. You can find your course outline via Blackboard. It is usually available at least two weeks before the start of your study period.

Note: You can also access your Course outline by going to the Course Finder, typing in your course code, eg COR109 and clicking search. As it may not be the most up-to-date version, it should be used as a guide only.

Prescribed textbooks are the required reading material that supplement your lectures and tutorials. Having regular and easy access to them is important. Confirm exactly what you will need with your lecturer or tutor in Week 1.

Textbook lists are available at the Co-op Bookshop online or at the store on Sippy Downs campus.

You can buy second-hand text books from the following places:

  • Public noticeboards — Located at Uni Club, near the Good Bean and outside the Brasserie
  • USC Blackboard — Blackboard Login > USC Community Tab > Campus Life and Student Groups > Textbooks – buy and sell here
  • USC Student Guild — has a textbook hub located at the Uni Club
  • Online through StudentVIP Textbooks

A copy of your textbook may be found in the Library Catalogue or Course Reserve.

Course readers

Course readers are listed in your course outline and are available for purchase either online or in store at Mail and Print Services (MaPS) at the Sippy Downs campus.

Online articles/chapters

Access to any required online articles/chapters are listed in your course outlines. For more information visit the Library.

Student diary and academic calendar

Keep track of your studies and important dates with the assistance of a student diary and an academic calendar. You will receive them in your welcome pack during Orientation. If you are unable to attend, they are also available through Student Central.

Note taking materials for class

Bring along note paper, pens and/or a laptop/tablet to class.
