Charlie is an Actuary who has been working in general insurance for over 20 years, specialising in personal insurance lines such as car and home insurance. He has been Chief Actuary at Youi for the last 8 years and prior to that was at Suncorp for nearly 10 years.
He has been involved in various climate related working groups of both the Actuaries Institute and Insurance Council, including the ICA flood committee in 2006-2007. In his work pricing home insurance in particular, long term climate patterns such as the IPO/PDO, IOD and SAM have been investigated as well as shorter term patterns such as ENSO and the MJO. This has been overlaid with analysis of storm data collected by the various agencies (including the BOM) and related data such as flood gauge information and the AR&R model to develop a wide view of how climate interacts with insurance risk. Notwithstanding the route through which the knowledge was developed, the views presented today are his and not those of his employer.
