Profile

Veteran coach Jan Cameron has been involved in high-level swimming for more than five decades. Jan is an Olympic silver medallist (Australian Paralympic swim team coach 2016) and has recently returned from the Rio Paralympics where seven of her swimmers competed successfully — one silver medal and six finalists.

Before taking up coaching, Jan was a highly successful swimmer in her own right, winning an Olympic silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Games and three medals at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.

Jan retired as a swimmer after the Tokyo Olympics and completed an Education degree, after which she took up coaching full-time. She forged a coaching career across Australia, Canada and the United States.

Jan moved to New Zealand in the early 1990s, where she transformed a small regional club into the country’s most successful swimming program. After working as a national coach at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Auckland, she then took on several roles at Swimming New Zealand, including as general manager for performance and pathways.

Jan took up her current role as the head coach of the USC Spartans’ Paralympic program in 2013, and has coached all seven members of the program to qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In 2016, Jan become only the third woman in Australia to receive the swimming’s highest coaching accolade, the Platinum Coaching Licence. The prestigious award recognises individuals who have coached athletes to medal-winning performances at the Olympics or World Championships, and who have displayed ongoing commitment and service to the sport at an international level.
