Fiji's cultured pearl industry has reached a significant milestone with a new farm harvesting 3,500 high-quality pearls.
The pearls, with an excellent colour range, were harvested by Decsi Pearls based in Namarai, Viti Levu. Decsi Pearls will continue to expand operations and predicts a strong 2017.
Since commercial pearl production began in Fiji in 2000, only three farms have contributed to production, despite international demand exceeding supply. Success and continued growth in this industry means more opportunities for local people and a stronger economy.
University of the Sunshine Coast Tropical Aquaculture Research, in partnership with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research strongly supports the development of Fiji's pearl industry.
