Fulbright Senior Specialist Program
Late in 2011, USC was the recipient of two of the eight U.S. Fulbright Senior Specialist Awards to be hosted in Australia in 2012. Awards of this nature and prestige are an integral part of growing our wider research network.
About the Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program is one of the largest and most prestigious educational exchange programs in the world, with activities in more than 155 countries worldwide.
Established by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the United States government in 1946, Fulbright international alumni include Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, governors and senators, ambassadors and artists, prime ministers and heads of state, professors and scientists, Supreme Court Justices, and chief executive officers.
Fulbright Scholarships support students and scholars – chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential – to research and study in each others' countries, exchange ideas and develop bilateral relations and connections to address common issues.
About the U.S. Senior Specialist Program
Within the Fulbright Program, the U.S. Senior Specialist Program supports Australian universities to bring U.S. Senior Specialists to Australia for two to six weeks.
Activities are designed to encourage Australian universities and United States faculty and professionals to collaborate on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities.

Dr Loren Kellogg
Lematta Professor of Forest Engineering in the College of Forestry, Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at Oregon State University.
Program title: Engage with the forest industry and the University to establish how best to deliver an effective post-secondary teaching in forest engineering for Australia.
Purpose of the program: Commonwealth Research Cooperative Forestry (CRCF) has re-established forest engineering research in Australia and grown it to be a program integral to industry success and development in 2011.
While this has filled the research and development gap, specialised training for Australian forest engineering remains unfilled.
University of the Sunshine Coast, working with the CRCF expertise, are seeking to fill this training gap and wish to start the process by scoping the mechanisms and needs under the guidance of established expertise in establishing and delivering engineering teaching.
Professor of Geography, Director of the UNC Center for Galapagos Studies, Co-Director of the UNC-USFQ Galapagos Science Center, San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador
Program title: Participation in a workshop of international specialists on the impact of climate change on iconic national parks, ensuring visitor choices and local communities’ resilience.
Purpose of the program: The main objective of the program is the development of an international collaborative research team with a multi-focal perspective to investigate climate change impacts in important ecosystems.
The program will facilitate a global response to understanding the connection between institutional structures, the biophysical environment, climate modeling, and the human-environment interface through tourism and local communities.
Through this collaboration Professor Walsh, as the senior researcher, will act in a mentoring role to less experienced researchers.
Professor Walsh will present lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels, and will participate in or lead seminars or workshops at USC. Further, Professor Welsh will meet with faculties at three Queensland universities and present public lectures on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane.
