Research involving the care and use of animals
The University of the Sunshine Coast Animal Ethics Committee reviews proposals for teaching activities and research involving animals. The Committee is responsible for promoting the ethical conduct of research and teaching involving the use of animals and protecting the wellbeing and welfare of those animals. The Committee reports to the Research Management Committee, the Academic Board, the National Health and Medical Research Council and the State Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.
Before conducting teaching or research that involves the care and use of animals, applicants must submit an application and receive approval from the Animal Ethics Committee.

The application process
To begin the application process for Animal Ethics approval, applicants must read and become familiar with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes. The Committee assesses applications using the Code as the standard for evaluating applications.
Applicants should complete the Application for Ethics Approval for Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes in Research or Teaching.
Application forms are available on the USC portal by following the pathway - My Organisations / Research and Research Training / Research Ethics / Animal Research Ethics / Forms.
The application form and all relevant attachments (as required in the application form) are submitted to the Secretary, Animal Ethics Committee.
Application submission
Although applications can be submitted at any time, they must be received at least 14 days prior to an Animal Ethics Committee meeting to enable that application to be considered by the Committee. Applications received less than 14 days prior to the next Committee meeting will be held for the following meeting.
