Research involving human participation
The University of the Sunshine Coast Human Research Ethics Committee reviews, for ethics approval, research proposals involving human participants and proposals for teaching/learning activities that include research involving human participants.
The Committee is responsible for ensuring that research involving humans is conducted ethically and that the welfare and rights of human participants in research are protected. The Committee reports to the Research Management Committee, the Academic Board, and the National Health and Medical Research Council.
From the beginning of 2011, there have been a number of new ethical review pathways and a new application form for low risk research.
The application process
To begin the application process for Human Research Ethics approval, applicants must read and become familiar with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. The Committee assesses applications using the National Statement as the standard for evaluating applications.
Complete the National Ethics Application Form (NEAF), if you consider your application is more than low risk or otherwise needs to be considered by the full Human Research Ethics Committee.
Complete the Low Risk Ethics Application Form, if you consider your application is only low risk research and can be expedited without going to full Committee review. This form is available on the University portal, and contains questions which will direct you back to the NEAF if your research project has more than a low ethical risk.
The application form and all relevant attachments are to be submitted to the Secretary, Human Research Ethics Committee.
Application submission
Applications can be submitted at any time. If the application needs to be considered by the full Human Research Ethics Committee, it must be received at least 21 days prior to a Human Research Ethics Committee meeting to enable that application to be assessed by the Committee. Applications received less than 21 days prior to the next Committee meeting will be held for the following meeting.
Assistance in submitting an application
Appointments for individual assistance and consultations can be arranged by contacting the Secretary, Human Research Ethics Committee or via email at humanethics@usc.edu.au.
