Registering your major or minor
Most undergraduate programs at the University allow students to nominate majors and/or minors.
If you are permitted to undertake a major / minor, details will be outlined in your program’s Study Plan. A major in a bachelor degree comprises 96 units that develop a coherent academic theme. A minor in a bachelor degree comprises 48 units that develop a coherent academic theme.
Students are required to register their major and/or minor with their faculty and should do so as soon as possible.
Access the Registration of Major / Minor form (PDF 244KB). The form is also available from Student Central on the USC Portal.
Interrupting your study
If, prior to census date, a student in their first semester of study finds they are unable to fulfil their study commitments they should contact Student Administration to discuss the possibility of deferring commencement of the program.
A student, who has been enrolled in at least one study period, can take up to a year off from study by not enrolling in any courses for up to two study periods. Approval to do this is not required. However, students should be aware of any impact this might have on their enrolment for future study and should look closely at the course prerequisites and requirements before making this decision.
Note: International students on a student visa must consult with USC International prior to requesting a break from study.
If a student does not enrol in the third consecutive study period, they will have their enrolment discontinued. If they later decide to study at USC again they will have had an 'interruption in their studies' and will need to reapply for entry via QTAC for an undergraduate program or directly to the University for a postgraduate program. Admission is automatic as long as the conditions in the
Enrolment – Academic Policy 10.4 are met.
