Headstart to Indonesian

An ability to speak an Asian language is highly advantageous for your future career opportunities.

With support from the Australian Government under its National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP), USC is now offering a new Headstart to Indonesian language initiative.

Under this program, you study two Indonesian courses starting at the beginner level:

Why study Indonesian?

  • Indonesian is one of the easiest of all languages in which you can acquire a basic proficiency.
  • Knowledge of the Indonesian language gives you the ability to access future career and travel opportunities through the increasing links of trade and commerce with Australia’s key regional neighbours.

Headstart to Indonesian scholarships

In 2012 a special scholarship is offered to those who enrol in Indonesian languages.

Headstart to Indonesian scholarships are available for two semesters of study and cover the $400 Headstart course tuition fee plus course materials.

There are 60 scholarships on offer, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) under the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program.

Scholarships for teachers

As well as the 60 scholarships for students, there are 10 scholarships on offer for teachers to join the Headstart to Indonesian initiative. The teachers's scholarships cover all university fees, textbooks and course materials for both courses (semester 1 and semester 2). In addition there will be funding to allow for teacher release from the classroom (contracts will be negotiated between USC and individual schools).

Teachers interested in applying for one of the teachers' scholarships should contact the External Relations team on: (07) 5456 5168 or schools@usc.edu.au

Professional development opportunities

The Headstart to Indonesian initiative offers the following professional development opportunities for participating teachers:

  • Two courses of Indonesian will get you half way towards gaining a Graduate Certificate in Arts at USC
  • Study the extra two courses of Indonesian needed to complete the Graduate Certificate over another two semesters
  • OR undertake the USC Lombok in-country study Indonesian option over summer (duration of 3 weeks each course, back to back). This option would allow teachers to complete a Graduate Certificate in Arts in one year.
  • OR opt to do Indonesian C in-country over three weeks in one summer break, and Indonesian D the following summer break or during Semester 2, 2013.
  • Add a further 4 courses in Indonesian studies to be eligible for a Graduate Diploma in Arts.

Visit the USC website to see what courses are available to complete the Graduate Certificate and Diploma in Arts
