Your study options
Choosing a course
More than 90 courses within the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Business; and Science, Health and Education are available to Headstart students. Deciding what course you would like to study may mean selecting a course that interests you most, or one that will best complement your future study plans. Or you may like to choose a course that builds on your favourite subjects at school.
One way to choose a Headstart course is to look at the degrees on offer at USC. Once you find a degree that interests you, look at the list of courses offered in the degree, read the course descriptions and see if they match the Headstart course offerings.
Choosing a core course is always a good option if you are not sure. Core courses are a component of nearly all USC undergraduate degrees and provide an excellent introduction to university study. There are three to choose from:
- COR109 Communication and Thought
- COR110 Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
- COR111 Environment, Technology and Sustainability
When you are considering your options, keep in mind that some courses have prerequisites. You may be required to have completed relevant high school study, or sit an assessment to determine your skill level, to meet a course prerequisite. Course prerequisites are listed under each course description (where applicable).
You can do more research on your best study options by visiting the campus, attending Headstart information events and talking to University staff.
Remember—you can complete one or two USC courses (one course per semester) during Years 11 and 12 as a Headstart student. The courses can be completed in one year, or you can study one course per year. A course takes one semester.
Refer to the courses and timetable for descriptions of the courses available to Headstart students in 2012. A select number of courses are offered at the USC Noosa Centre at Noosa Junction.

Changing your course enrolment
Make sure you discuss your individual circumstances with USC Student Services staff and your school’s Headstart Coordinator before making any decision to withdraw.
If your circumstances change you may be able to move into a different course before the semester has commenced, depending on places available. You will be unable to change to a different course once classes have commenced.
If you withdraw from your course before the census date (end of Week 5) in each semester, you will not receive a result and all tuition fees will be refunded. If you withdraw after the census date and before the end of Week 9, you will not be eligible for a refund of fees and you will receive a WN (withdrawn without penalty) grade. If you withdraw after the end of Week 9, you will receive a WF (withdrawn-fail) grade and will not be eligible for a refund of fees. Whatever you choose to do, your OP or future application to university will not be affected.
